The journey to Haiti was successful. We ended up flying on Missionary Airlines International out of Fort Pierce, Fl. It wasn’t until we landed that we were told we had no exit strategy…Oops. Anyway, that’s another story completely.
In trying to prepare mentally for this trip, I was given a lot of advice and a lot of caution. After having been there, I can tell you this: there wasn’t a way to accurately prepare for what I saw and experienced. That being said, in some regards it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. For example, the media portrays a place of chaos, desperation and danger. These things exist, it’s true, but not to the degree in which I was led to believe. I never felt unsafe. I never encountered violent people. Everyone that I met and came in contact with, though hungry, thirsty, injured and often alone, was hopeful and appreciative of any help they could get. I have never met a people so filled with faith and peace. Everyone has been affected by what has happened and yet everyone only looks forward. It has put everything in my life into perspective….
